How to Add Google Analytics to Shopify
The first thing you will need is a Google account. If you do not already have one simply go to Google and open a Gmail account. The process is simple and you can even open one just for running Google Analytics on your Shopify store.
Once you have your Google account set up, follow these steps:
- Go to the Google Analytics site and at the top right corner select “Create account.”
- After the step above, sign in and click on “Create New Account”.
- Pick the website and then fill in the details required.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and find “Get Tracking ID” and click it. Accept Google terms and conditions.
- You will receive the tracking code. Copy this code on the next page.
- Go to your Shopify store admin and click “Settings” then go to “Online store”.
- The code that you got from Google Analytics, copy it into the space provided. The code will be added to your Shopify store
After completing the steps above you will need to go to Google Analytics and activate the E-commerce Tracking feature. You can do this through the following steps:
- At the top of the Google Analytics page, you will see the menu bar. Click the “Admin” button.
- On the drop-down menu, you will find your account. Click on it.
- Select “View Settings” in the third column.
- Go down until you find the “Ecommerce Settings” part and click on the toggle. It should turn on.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Save”
And you are done!
When you first add Google Analytics to your Shopify store, you may be very excited to go through the data…you know before it starts to look complicated and bore you. But a little patience will suffice as Google Analytics will often take at least 24 hours before collecting information.

What Type of Reports Will I Get with Google Analytics?
There are hundreds of reports that you can get with Google Analytics. All that information can leave you a bit overwhelmed. Not to worry though. All you need to start with are a few basic overview reports. If you want extra information, you can build on from there.
On the left of your screen on the Google Analytics site, you should be able to view the different categories of reports. It is important to understand these categories. They are:
- Real-time reports
Real Time Reports
These reports will help you analyze the traffic to your website. You are able to tell who is on your site, where they have located geographically and which parts or sections of your website that they are on.
I mean how cool is this?
With such information, you can tell how that marketing campaign that you implemented is performing. To get to the real-time reports section, simply click “Real Time”, then go to “Overview”.
With the Overview, you are able to see plenty of real-time data on your screen. However, when you want to dig a bit deeper, you can also select either content, locations, conversions, traffic source etc.
And that’s not all.
When you have made a blog, you will be able to tell whether it has received any views and the effects it has had on the traffic to your site.
This is yet another interesting section. With audience reports, you can tell the location, age or gender of the visitors to your Shopify store as well as what device they are using to access your stores such as PC, laptop, smartphone or Mac.
You can even tell what percentage of new users have viewed your site —a useful feature to gauge the effects of your marketing.

As you familiarize yourself with Google Analytics, it doesn’t hurt to have extra information. The Universal Google Analytics takes things a step further by providing you with even more data and more features.
- Go to Shopify admin and open in a new browser window.
- Select “Online Store” then pick “Preferences”.
- Go down to where you find Google Analytics and select “Upgrade to the Latest Version”.
Now that you have upgraded, it is time to enable Universal Google Analytics. Simply sign in to your Google Analytics account and follow the steps below:
- Go to the drop-down menu and select “Analytics”.
- Select your Google account.
- On the page that follows, click “Website” and then go ahead and fill the form. You will also need to add the domain of your website URL. Don’t forget to uncheck the boxes at the bottom as they are not important.
- Scroll at the bottom of the page and click on “Get Tracking ID”.
- Select “I Accept” on the terms and conditions section.
- The next page will provide you with the Tracking ID. Copy this.
- On a new browser window open Shopify store admin and go to “Online Store” and select “Preferences”.
- Find the Google Analytics accounts part and paste the Tracking ID.
- Don’t forget to remove Password Protection on your Shopify store. This step allows Google Analytics to track your visitors.
And that’s it, you are done!
Let’s talk some more about E-commerce tracking now that we have the latest version of Google Analytics.
You can choose between the basic data which includes transactions and revenue with the Basic E-commerce Tracking option. You can also dig deeper for extra information with the Enhanced Ecommerce Tracking.
How to Turn on Basic E-commerce Tracking
The first thing is to go to the Google Analytics menu and select the drop-down menu. Then…
- You will find 3 main categories. These are Account, Properties, and View.
- Select “Ecommerce Settings”.
- You will find an “Enable Ecommerce toggle. Turn it ON and you are done!
If you want more details on your visitors you will need to turn on Enhanced Ecommerce Tracking.
How to Turn on Enhanced E-commerce Tracking
Go to your Shopify admin and select “Online Store” then pick “Preferences”. Then follow the steps below:
- Find the Google Analytics section and select the checkbox saying “Use Enhanced E-commerce”.
- Select “Save”.
- If you have not yet signed in to your Google Analytics account, do so, go to the menu bar and click on “Admin”.
- On the drop-down menu, you can choose the Account, the Property as well as the View.
- Select “Ecommerce Settings”.
- Go to the “Next”.
- You will find the “Enable Enhanced Ecommerce Reporting” toggle and turn it ON
- Click on “Submit” and you are done.
